Obstetrics

Obstetrics is focused on pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Obstetricians manage prenatal care, oversee labour and delivery, and provide care for women after childbirth. Their goal is to ensure the health and safety of both the mother and the baby throughout the reproductive process.

Types of Procedures in Obstetrics

  1. Prenatal Ultrasound: Uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the fetus in the womb. It helps monitor fetal development, detect potential abnormalities, assess fetal growth, and determine the due date.
  2. Amniocentesis: A procedure where a small amount of amniotic fluid is sampled through a needle inserted into the uterus. It’s used to test for genetic disorders, infections, and fetal lung maturity.
  3. Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): Involves taking a sample of tissue from the placenta (chorionic villi) to test for genetic abnormalities like Down syndrome. It is usually done between 10 and 13 weeks of pregnancy.
  4. Non-Stress Test (NST): A monitoring procedure that measures fetal heart rate patterns in response to fetal movements. It is used to assess the well-being of the fetus, particularly in high-risk pregnancies.
  5. Biophysical Profile (BPP): Combines an ultrasound and an NST to evaluate fetal health by assessing heart rate, muscle tone, movement, breathing, and amniotic fluid levels.
  6. Labour Induction: A process to start labour artificially using medications like oxytocin or by breaking the water (amniotomy). It is done when it is medically necessary to deliver the baby before spontaneous labour begins.
  7. Cesarean Section (C-Section): A surgical procedure where the baby is delivered through an incision made in the abdomen and uterus. It may be performed for various reasons, including complications during labour or a breech presentation.
  8. Episiotomy: A surgical cut made in the perineum (the area between the vagina and anus) to widen the vaginal opening during childbirth. It is less commonly performed today but may be done in certain situations to facilitate delivery.
  9. Vacuum Extraction: A method used during vaginal delivery where a vacuum device is applied to the baby’s head to assist in guiding the baby out of the birth canal, usually when labour is not progressing adequately.
  10. Forceps Delivery: A procedure where forceps (specialised tongs) are used to gently grasp the baby’s head and assist in delivery, often used when the baby needs help to be born during a prolonged labour.
  11. Postpartum Care: Includes monitoring and managing the mother’s physical and emotional recovery after childbirth. It involves assessing uterine involution, managing perineal discomfort, and addressing issues like postpartum depression.
  12. Placenta Examination: After delivery, the placenta is examined to ensure it is complete and functioning properly. This can help identify potential issues like placenta accreta or retained placenta.
