Having qualified from Sheffield in 1993, Dr. Samer trained in general surgery, general medicine, accident and emergency and neurology before starting his training in ophthalmology. In 1996 he started his ophthalmology training in Glasgow and then went on the senior house officer rotation in Leeds. He then joined the specialist registrar rotation in 1999 in the West Midlands and 2004 was appointed Consultant in the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, with a specialist interest in retinal diseases. Despite this specialist interest, he continued to oversee a large volume of general adult ophthalmology and was responsible for approximately ten thousand patient episodes annually.
