Retinal Surgery

Retinal surgery involves procedures aimed at treating various conditions affecting the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Some common types of retinal surgeries include:

  • Vitrectomy: This procedure involves removing the vitreous gel from the eye and may be performed to treat conditions such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Detachment, Macular Hole, or Vitreous Haemorrhage. During vitrectomy, small instruments are used to remove the vitreous gel and possibly repair or remove scar tissue, membranes, or abnormal blood vessels.
  • Retinal Detachment Repair: Retinal detachment occurs when the retina pulls away from its normal position at the back of the eye. Surgery for retinal detachment typically involves sealing the retinal tear or hole and reattaching the retina to the underlying tissue. Techniques include scleral buckling (placing a silicone band around the eye to indent the wall and close the tear) and pneumatic retinopexy (injecting a gas bubble into the eye to push the retina back into place).
  • Macular Hole Repair: A macular hole is a small break in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Surgery to repair a macular hole involves removing the vitreous gel and possibly peeling off the inner limiting membrane of the retina to allow the hole to close and the retina to heal.
  • Epiretinal Membrane (ERM) Peel: An epiretinal membrane is a thin layer of scar tissue that can form on the surface of the retina, causing distortion or blurring of vision. Surgery involves peeling off this membrane from the retina to restore clearer vision.
  • Laser Photocoagulation: This procedure uses a laser to seal or destroy abnormal blood vessels in conditions like Diabetic Retinopathy or Retinal Vein Occlusion. It can also be used to create small burns on the retina to treat retinal tears or prevent retinal detachment.
